Program Description:
This enriching training is designed for play therapists and clinical supervisors seeking to enhance their understanding and application of clinical supervision frameworks. Participants will explore the major models of supervision—psychotherapy-based, developmental, and process-oriented—and learn how these models intersect with and support play therapy practice.
Through engaging discussion, experiential activities, and case examples, we will examine how supervision can be tailored to meet the developmental needs of supervisees while staying grounded in core therapeutic principles. Whether you are supervising graduate students, provisionally licensed therapists, or RPT candidates, this training offers a clear and practical framework for reflective, ethical, and growth-centered supervision.
Special attention will be given to integrating these models within the context of Child-Centered Play Therapy, promoting supervision that is relational, culturally responsive, and clinically sound.
Learning Objectives:
-
Identify and differentiate between psychotherapy-based, developmental, and process models of supervision, and articulate how each applies to play therapy supervision.
-
Develop a comprehensive supervision contract that reflects ethical guidelines, cultural responsiveness, and clarity around roles, expectations, and boundaries.
-
Demonstrate knowledge of legal and ethical standards for clinical and play therapy supervision, including informed consent, documentation, and risk management.
-
Apply culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate strategies in supervision that account for power dynamics, supervisee identity, and trauma-informed practices.
-
Implement evaluation methods to assess supervisee competence using both formative (ongoing feedback) and summative (formal evaluation) tools aligned with APT standards.
-
Utilize supervision interventions such as live observation, audio/video review, and expressive arts techniques (e.g., sandtray) to support supervisee reflection and growth.
-
Address common supervisory challenges, including managing supervisee resistance, ethical concerns, and remediation planning, using a strengths-based and person-centered approach.
-
Integrate personal values and theoretical orientation into a working model of supervision that aligns with best practices in both clinical supervision and play therapy.
